Beacon 3.0 Is Here!

by Stephen Rodgers

If you’re seeing this message, then you’re missing out.

What I mean by that is that Beacon 3.0 is now online, and you need to repoint your links and/or RSS feed to http://www.lighthousebc.com/beacon. This blog will no longer update automatically, since we will be doing all our work over there.

If you were already pointed at that address, then you’re already enjoying the 3.0 goodness and you’ll never see this message.

Either way, see you there!

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Pastor Reverend Patrick Cho on passing his ordination with flying colors! We are all duly proud of your accomplishments, but even more so of your character and witness in giving all glory to the Lord who has so richly blessed you. May you continue to use your gifts in His service.

Sincerely,
The Staff of the LBC Beacon

ps. We’re still going to call you Pastor though.

Editor’s Note: January 2010

by Stephen Rodgers

Well, I was hoping that this was going to be the Editor’s Note where I gave my big announcement, but it looks like that is only going to be half true. The plan was that you would log into the Beacon on January 1st, and everything would look quite different. But that’s probably going to happen sometime in the next few weeks instead, so I guess I’ll have to settle for telling you about it instead of showing you. So without further ado, put on your imagination caps and I’ll take you on a tour of Beacon 3.0.

  • All the features that you’ve come to love in Beacon 2.0 are still there: RSS, searching, categories, and the archive will all still be part of the site.
  • All of the articles from Beacon 2.0 will be there, AND we’re going to be incorporating all the articles from the Shine the Light! blog as well. That means that all those articles can now be searched and indexed as well.
  • We’ve added some new code (RefTagger) which will automatically display little tool-tip bubbles with Scripture in them when you mouse-over the link. So if an author just writes “John 3:16″ in their article, by mousing over the reference, it will popup the text of the verse. This is the same code that Grace To You and Desiring God are using on their websites.
  • Additionally, we’ve added some new code that will allow you to push an article to your Twiter, Facebook, or Myspace just by clicking a link. So if you read something you like and want to share it, it’s never been easier to do so.
  • Last but not least, we’ve made some subtle changes to the layout and text to make things easier to read.

Like I said, you should notice a change one of these days when we convert over to Beacon 3.0, but as long as you are still pointing your browser to http://www.lighthousebc.com/beacon, you shouldn’t need to do anything other than enjoy the new bells and whistles.

At least that’s the plan. ;-P

Editor’s Note: Beacon News (and Matt Chandler)

by Stephen Rodgers

Hey Everyone,

Just to let you know, I have been so encouraged by all of you visiting and reading the Beacon. I’ve had people thank me, challenge me, and seen conversations flying around on Facebook. And that makes it all worthwhile.

However, all this work doesn’t take place in a vaccuum. With Christmas here, the team needs a rest, I need a rest (mostly to work on other Beacon-related activities), and quite frankly, you all might need a rest to spend time with your families. And you should.

That’s why the Beacon is taking a two-week vacation (sort of). There won’t be any updates to the blog except for the Weekly Links feature (since I do that, and if I build up three weeks of links, it won’t be pretty). However, we should resume new LBC content on January 4th. And just to whet your appetite, there should be a big announcement then, so you don’t want to miss it!

Also, since I wrote my other post regarding Matt Chandler, I thought it appropriate to provide you with something of an update. Please keep him and his family in prayer.

Thanks again for making the first few months here at the Beacon a wonderful time.

Editor’s Note: December 2009

by Stephen Rodgers

It’s hard to believe that December is here already. The Beacon has only been up and running in it’s new form for about a month, but I’d like to share some numbers with you:

  • We’re updating about four times a week, usually Tuesday through Friday, with an occasional bonus article.
  • Overall traffic is up significantly from where it used to be.
  • There are currently 244 articles for you to read on this blog. That’s three years of Beacon!

That being said there are still some areas that we need help and prayer. Please consider the following:

  • This blog/newsletter is a free ministry of LBC. It’s completely run and staffed by volunteers. No one gets paid for this. Every single member of staff does this because they see this as a way to serve the body of Christ to the glory of God. So please, make our work meaningful: enjoy it! Read the Beacon. Share it. Tell us if you think something could be improved. Talk to a writer about their article. Everyone is encouraged when they know their work is used and appreciated.
  • Pray for the Beacon ministry. Seriously, this is a great support for us. The importance of prayer is hard to over-emphasize.
  • Last but not least, if you feel so inclined, share with the church via the Beacon. We’re happy to receive submissions from non-staff writers, and we’ll work with you to get an article edited, polished, and published if that’s something you’re interested in.

Thank you again for all your support. We all feel truly blessed to have this opportunity to serve.

Editor’s Note #2: November 2009

by Stephen Rodgers

And we’re off! From this moment on, we will be attempting to keep a weekly schedule here at the Beacon, bringing you 2-5 articles each week from our Pastors, Elders, various Ministry Coordinators, as well as the staff writers here at the Beacon. I would suggest checking back daily if you want to keep up with the latest articles (although we’ll probably take a break over the weekends at first).

Thank you for your prayers and support, and please continue to pray for us as we strive to keep this going for the glory of God.

by Stephen Rodgers

Well, it’s almost that time.

And by that time I’m referring to the transition of the Beacon to a weekly update schedule. The last month has been a bit exciting: we’ve redesigned the site, enabled some cool features, and uploaded literally hundreds of old articles. We’ve made some pretty significant announcements regarding new content, and we’ve had some special posts from some special friends. We’ve also prayed a lot of prayers, drank a lot of caffeine, and worked out some of the kinks in getting a group of people in different places able to work together effectively (the prayers and the caffeine helped a lot with that).

If all goes well, starting next week you should be starting to see anywhere from 4-6 articles every week. Eventually we hope to roll out some rather big changes on the way we host the blog, which would allow us to enable some other neat features…but that will probably be a little while in coming.

Please keep us in prayer as we try to make this work.

Editor’s Note #2: October 2009

Well hello again everyone!

As you can see from the site so far, the team has been hard at work uploading the old articles from previous issues of the Beacon. So far, we’ve uploaded about 70 articles and there are even more to come! If we manage to stay on schedule, you should be able to access all the articles from all the previous issues by the end of the month.

Which brings us to the next big announcement: after we finish uploading the old Beacon articles, we’re going to start in on sermon notes! JR has been kind enough to supply us with his sermon notes from 2008 and 2009, and we’re currently looking into the best way to get those included and accessible to you.

Well, that’s it for this week. Tune in next week for an article highlighting some of the best Christian resources available on the internet. Until then, we’ll be copy/pasting as quickly as we can.

As the new editor, I guess this is where I try to say something humorous, informative, Biblical, and profound.

As most of you who frequent this blog probably know, there are going to be some significant changes coming in the next month or two.  We’re probably 5-6 weeks away from genuinely new content, since we have to go through a full 4-week cycle of notifying all our new contributors, reviewing submitted content, and preparing it for publication.

However, the new staff is already hard at work converting and preparing the previous unpublished Beacon content, and if the Lord wills it you should start seeing those articles quietly uploaded to the blog within a week or two.  The absolute easiest way for you to keep up with that is by subscribing to the RSS feed (note: actually, that won’t work since I’m pre-dating the articles so that they’ll archive properly), but I’ve also enabled search functionality, categorical sorting, and monthly archives if you prefer a more manual approach to the blog.  Plus, I’m going to do my best to give you a weekly post as well, be that an update of some sort, links to other material, or a letter from a friend at the Ostrava church.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have also unapproved all comments previously made, closed the comments for all previous posts, and disabled comments on future posts.  It’s one less thing for me to worry about while we get up and running.

Please bear with us as we iron out all the kinks, shake out the dust, and generally figure out what all these pretty buttons do.

Editor’s Note: March 2009

What a blessing it was to share in sweet fellowship with the Mellwigs. As Meinolf preached during the Missions Conference and many at LBC had the opportunity to interact with Meinolf and Martina for the first time, it was a great reminder that the work of God stretches far beyond our San Diego. To know that we have like-minded partners carrying out the same work of the Gospel in the Czech is an amazing thought to consider.

With fresh memories of our dear partners, we can begin to prepare to send out our own summer missions teams. Whether you are physically going or not, please be in prayer and consider how you will continue to do Gospel-work in making disciples of Christ.
